A Fold in the Horizon

Artist in residence Jao San Pedro, a mutlidisciplinary designer and conceptual artist, staged community-driven collaborations in our town of San Juan, La Union, to answer the question: How is transgendering a process, and how might its essence exist in all of us?

  • In collaboration with the Sericulture Center of DMMMSU, the artist told her own personal story by drawing parallels around transgendering, the silkworm’s life cycle, and the practice of silk weaving.

  • The artist collaborated with five movement artists, an audio producer, and a film producer, to stage a study of how transgendering might be coded in physical gesture. The study culminates in a video work.

  • On top of a public dialogue we staged in San Juan around transgendering, Jao’s work, presented by Emerging Islands, will be exhibited in Art Fair Philippines and the UP Vargas Museum this year.
