Residency

The residency is an offer to artists and thinkers from all backgrounds - art, literature, music, photography, philosophy, and the sciences (both natural and social), to study, work, and play for at least a month in surftown. Artists will have opportunities to interact with the larger community at their own pace, carry out their own research with support from the curatorial team, produce art in a shared workspace environment, and participate in workshops and events they will co-instigate with us.

Research

Artists in residence are given the opportunity to conduct field research, and are invited to explore LU-based scholarship through our partnerships with local libraries, archives, and educational institutions.

Artist Output

Residents of the program must work towards the realization of a work of art that contributes to the current curatorial theme, contribute to community workshops, or share their practice in our open studio series.

Emerging Islands House

Artists have 24-hour access to the Emerging Islands House, which functions as our living, working, and studio space. Our house is where artists collaborate, where we hold dialogues, screenings, and events for the community, and where we work together on our projects. It is equipped with internet access, a common kitchen area, and both communal and private spaces to work.

Emerging Islands’ Open Studio Series invites artists and collaborators to share process and work to our community, and local stakeholders.

Knowledge

Sharing

Emerging Islands is guided by an archipelagic framework: connections are at the heart of how we organise.

Emerging Islands fosters dialogue between artists, conservationists, and community stakeholders through collaborative projects, field research, inclusive artistic production, workshops, and online discussions.

Our workshop series invites members of the community to participate in our collaborating artists’ processes. We hope to enable students to expand the ways they tell their stories both to their community, and to themselves.
